Hawaii is coming to Japan. Literally!

Hawaii is moving toward Japan at a rate of about 4 inches per year.

Through satellite images we can see that the Island of Maui, Hawaii had been gradually moving toward Japan at a rate of 3 inches per year since 1976. Plate tectonic theory predicts that the plate that Hawaii is on will continue to move Hawaii in that direction at a rate of 4 inches per year.

The Earth's crust is constantly moving. The Earth's surface is made up of large moving plates. Shifts in the plates have caused massive earthquakes. For instance, the Pacific Plate and the Eurasian Plate collided under the Japanese islands in 1923, causing an earthquake that killed 100,000 people.
